Baseball and softball injuries can be broken down into two categories: acute injuries and overuse problems.

Acute injuries

"Acute" means that something has happened to cause an injury, like an accident, trauma, etc. Examples of trauma can include twisting your knee, sliding into base incorrectly, and direct impacts with other players or the ball.

Acute injuries in softball and baseball include:

  • ACL injuries
Twisting your knee or running into another player can result in an injury to your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

  • Meniscus tears
Twisting the knee can also cause tears of a cartilage in your knee, called the meniscus.

  • Contusions
Deep bruises from running into another player or getting hit by an errant ball.

  • Ankle sprains
Twisting your ankle while running causes a sprain with significant pain and swelling.

Overuse problems

Baseball and softball are notoriously hard on the shoulders and knees. Typical problems include:

  • Rotator cuff tendonitis
